Viners was one of Sheffield's major silverplate manufacturers, established in 1908 and granted a Royal Warrant as Cutlers and Silversmiths to King George V in 1936. The Alpha Plate designation identifies this as their highest-grade silverplate. The chasing covers the full face of the tray in scrolling acanthus foliage with cartouche panels, a decorative vocabulary typical of Viners' production in the 1930s and 1940s.
