Vintage Mid-Century Matte Black Compote Bowl, Tripod Base

Matte black footed bowl by Maurice of California, raised on a sculptural tripod base with three arched legs. The bowl has a horizontally ribbed band around the outside and a soft matte black finish inside and out. Maurice of California made decorative pottery in this mid-century vein, and the pedestal-and-tripod form is one of their more sculptural shapes. It works as a centerpiece, a fruit bowl, or a standing object on a shelf or console.

Good overall, with one flaw to note. There is a chip to the rim where the glaze has broken away and the lighter body shows through, with minor associated flaking at the edge. It is visible in the close photographs. Aside from the rim chip the piece is sound. No cracks or crazing were found, and the matte black finish is even across the bowl, the ribbed band, and the tripod base. The unglazed body shows at the foot rims, as made.
