Thomas Moore Irish Melodies, Lalla Rookh & Other Poems

Thomas Moore’s Irish Melodies in a substantial Victorian gift binding from William Mackenzie, mid to late 19th century. This edition gathers the Melodies with Lalla Rookh, National Airs, and other works, illustrated throughout with steel and wood engravings and presented at a generous 10 by 8.5 inches. The dark green leather is dense with gilt, double border panels on both boards, raised bands, and elaborate spine tooling, and the page edges are fully gilt. An inscription on the front endpaper reads “Kathleen Moore, 1912.”

The full leather binding is structurally sound with both boards secure. Rubbing and wear are visible at the corners, edges, and spine ends, with small areas of leather loss concentrated at the corners and along the spine. The rear hinge shows slight cracking but remains attached and stable.

Gilt decoration on the boards and spine is bright and well defined. All edges gilt, with light scratching and dulling consistent with age.

The interior is complete with all plates present. Moderate foxing is found throughout, heavier on blank pages and margins, typical for the period. No odor. The 1912 inscription to Kathleen Moore is present on the front endpaper.

A solid and attractive example with honest wear and strong shelf presence.
