Antique Staffordshire Brown Transferware Plate

Godwin made this plate in Staffordshire in the 1840s and sold it into the American market, which is why an English pottery printed a Philadelphia scene at its center. The view is the Fairmount Water Works on the Schuylkill River, one of the great engineering showpieces of early America, framed by a dense morning glory border. A strong, dark transfer impression on this one.

This plate is in good antique condition with a strong, well saturated transfer. The central scene and border print are crisp and fully legible. There is light overall glaze wear consistent with age and gentle use. I do not see any chips, cracks, or hairlines, and there is no meaningful crazing. The back mark is clean and easy to read.
