1876 Trevelyan Macaulay Selections

Bound in full leather as a Blackheath and Greenwich Ladies' College prize and presented to Miss Helen Cox in 1878, this 1876 edition gathers Lord Macaulay's most influential essays and historical writing into a single volume. Edited by his nephew George Otto Trevelyan, it served as an intentional introduction to Macaulay's thought at the height of his influence. The binding is the draw here. Gilt borders frame the boards, the spine carries raised bands and ornate tooling with a red leather title label, and the edges and endpapers are marbled throughout.

The full leather binding is secure with no loose pages. Boards show surface rubbing and scattered scratches from handling along with light wear at the edges and corners. The spine remains strong with clear gilt decoration and the red label intact. Marbled edges and endpapers are present and clean. Interior pages are complete with no losses. Moderate foxing is visible and heavier on the preliminary and blank pages, which is typical for the period. The prize bookplate is present on the front pastedown.
