Antique Poetry Red Leather Book "The Works of Oliver Goldsmith"

A handsome mid-19th century edition of The Works of Oliver Goldsmith, published in London by Charles Daly circa 1840s to 1850s. This volume gathers Goldsmith’s best-known poems, essays, plays, and The Vicar of Wakefield, with a biographical introduction by Washington Irving. Bound in rich red calf with ornate gilt decoration, raised bands, and gilt page edges, it has strong decorative appeal as well as literary interest.

[condition] The leather remains supple and richly colored, with gilt tooling still bright and crisp. There is minor surface wear and rubbing to the edges and corners, consistent with age, and a darkened patch on the spine where a label or sticker was at some point removed. The binding is firm throughout, and the interior pages are clean with only mild age toning to the endpapers. The all-edges-gilt shimmer beautifully. Illustrations are sharp and well preserved. A very good copy overall.
